Xena's life takes a nightmarish turn when Callisto (Hudson Leick) escapes from the Underworld by infiltrating her dreams.
Synopsis
You can't keep a good woman down but it's even more difficult to keep a bad one down.
When Xena dreams bad things seem to follow. She's having nightmares about her part in the death of Callisto. In her dreams even Gabrielle seems to turn from her. Xena is haunted by guilt. Her dreams may haught her night, but they are not stopping her from hunting durning the day. She and Gabrielle are tracking Theodorus, part of Callisto's old 'crew', while Joxer follows. He, of course, as Joxer is want to do, gets himself caught. Xena scares off the guys with her wicked war cry and after a moments fun, cuts Joxer down from the tree he was dangling from. They set up camp and bed down for the night.
Once again the nightmares start. Callisto and Ares have been plotting together to invade Xena's dreams. She finds herself in a dreamscape. Taunting her, Callisto and Ares get her to admit her guilt regarding Callisto's death when she is suddenly whirled into a rock. Xena has switched bodies with Callisto.
At first things are a bit confusing. Gabrielle is now with Callisto but she doesn't realize it because she is still seeing Xena. Argo seems to be the only one who can tell something is wrong. CallXena torments Gabrielle with her faux guilt about killing Callisto saying that it should have been Gabrielle who should have killed the blonde psycho. Gabrielle, taken in by her own guilt, agrees and CallXena starts to train Gabrielle to fight, and kill, with her staff.
Meanwhile, XenaCall manages to talk Hades into giving her a day to set things right. Once she's out of Tartarus the first thing she finds is Argo who has been sliced with a sword. Although wounded Argo is not dead. While XenaCall tends the horse Joxer shows up, seeing only Callisto's body over the injured horse, he tries to defend Argo. It takes some convincing but XenaCall manages to make him understand what has happened. She is trapped in Callisto's body.
XenaCall catches up with CallXena who taunts her by saying she has killed Gabrielle. They fight and XenaCall wrestles CallXena to the ground. Just has this happens Gabrielle arrives and points her knife at XenaCall. Somehow, XenaCall manages to convince Gabrielle that she is Xena trapped in Callisto's body. CallXena gets away and runs off to find her army. Theodorus, upon seeing "Xena" tells his men to thrown down their swords because "Xena" doesn't kill unarmed people. Unfortunately for him, CallXena slits his throat. The remaining men join "Xena" and they ride to Amphibolus where she captures the entire town and keeps them hostage in a cave.
XenaCall, Gabrielle and Joxer all head out to save the townsfolk of Amphibolus. As the two enemies start fighting XenaCall starts to fade...is her time up? Luckily she has the prescience of mind to throw a dart at CallXena which puts the other woman to sleep. The two end up back in the Tartarus dream world. This time, XenaCall plays on CallXena's guilt. Soon she is surrounded by all her own victims. The last we see of Callisto her body smashes into the same rock Xena's did.
Gabrielle and the townspeople watch for Xena's return, unfortunately it is Callisto's body that returns with Xena is still in it! The episode ends with XenaCall telling Gabrielle that if she can't live with Xena in Callisto's body she would understand is the bard wanted to leave.
